Curaçao is a hidden gem in the Caribbean, overflowing with vibrant culture, breathtaking beaches, and fascinating history. If you have just one day to explore this beautiful island, don’t worry! Here are my personal tips and must-do activities that will help you make the most of your time in Curaçao.
Renting a Car: The Best Way to Explore Curaçao
First things first — if you want to truly experience all that Curaçao has to offer, renting a car is the best way to explore the island. Curaçao is about 171 square miles, small enough to cover in a day but big enough that public transportation can be tricky. With your own car, you can move at your own pace and stop whenever something catches your eye.
I found Google Maps and Waze incredibly helpful. They provide real-time directions, traffic updates, and easy routes to beaches, viewpoints, and hidden gems. Having a car means you can pull over at a local market, discover a secluded beach, or grab a snack at a roadside food stall — moments you’d miss without the freedom of driving yourself.
Money Tips: Currency and Payments
Curaçao’s local currency is the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (XCG), but the US dollar is widely accepted everywhere. Many restaurants, shops, and tour companies also accept credit cards. That said, I recommend carrying at least $20 in small cash for food stalls, local markets, or parking meters.
Having both USD and XCG in your wallet makes things easier — you’ll always be prepared no matter where you stop.
Strolling Through Willemstad: A Must-Do
When thinking of things to do in Curaçao, strolling through Willemstad should be at the top of your list. The colorful buildings along Handelskade are iconic and perfect for photos. I suggest starting your morning here with a coffee and soaking in the vibrant Dutch-Caribbean atmosphere.
Don’t miss the famous Queen Emma Bridge. This floating bridge connects two sides of the city, and walking across while boats sail underneath is a unique experience you won’t forget.
Savoring Local Flavors: Try Pastechi
After exploring Willemstad, it’s time to enjoy some local food. Curaçao is known for its mix of cultures, and one of my favorite bites was the pastechi — a fried pastry filled with cheese, chicken, beef, or tuna. They cost around $1.50 each and are the perfect snack to keep you fueled while sightseeing.
Relaxing on the Beaches: Mambo & Jan Thiel
No Curaçao itinerary is complete without some beach time.
Mambo Beach is lively, with beach clubs, music, and turquoise waters — great for people-watching and enjoying the island vibe.
Jan Thiel Beach is calmer and more upscale, with crystal-clear waters and gorgeous views. Perfect if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Whichever you choose, bring plenty of sunscreen — the Caribbean sun is strong!
A Highlight Activity: Splashy Iguana Tours
If you’re looking for truly unique tours in Curaçao, this is the one you can’t miss. The Splashy Iguana Tour is the island’s only amphibious bus tour, taking you on a 2-hour adventure by both land and sea.
You’ll drive through Willemstad, Pietermaai, and Caracasbaaiweg, before making a spectacular splash straight into Spanish Water Bay. From the comfort of your seat, you’ll see stunning waterfront mansions, learn fun facts about Curaçao, and enjoy the thrill of cruising both city streets and Caribbean waters.
Pro tip: Book in advance — especially on cruise ship days — because seats sell out fast. Tours are available at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Creating Lasting Memories
As my day in Curaçao came to an end, I realized how much this island offers in such a short time. From exploring the lively streets of Willemstad, enjoying local food, and relaxing on sandy beaches, to experiencing the one-of-a-kind Splashy Iguana Tour, every moment felt like an adventure.
If you’re planning just one day in Curaçao, this itinerary will give you the perfect balance of culture, relaxation, and fun. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with your family, there’s truly something for everyone.
So pack your bags, rent that car, and get ready for an unforgettable day in Curaçao — an island full of color, history, and adventure.
