Docking in Curaçao on a cruise? Here’s exactly what to do in Otrobanda and Punda walking guide, food spots, history, and insider tips.

When our cruise ship docked in Curaçao, we didn’t rush to book an excursion.
We stepped off the ship… and realized everything we needed was right there.
If you’re wondering:
Where do cruise ships dock in Curaçao?
Is Willemstad walkable from the cruise port?
What can I do in Curaçao without going far?
Here’s exactly what we did all within walking distance from the ship.
First: Where You Actually Dock in Curaçao

Most large cruise ships dock at the Mega Pier in Otrobanda.
That means when you step out of the cruise ship, you are already in the heart of downtown Willemstad.
No shuttle needed. No long taxi rides.
As soon as we stepped off, there were local vendors selling hats, souvenirs, cold drinks, and handmade items. It feels lively right away.
Tip: Bring small cash if you want to buy something from vendors.
Stop 1: Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort (2-5 minute walk)
📍 Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pLwVpx9xNGSDCo1c9
Right outside the port, you walk into the Renaissance area.
Important to know:The mall itself is open-air. It’s not enclosed with air conditioning. The air conditioning is inside individual shops.
Here you’ll find:
Starbucks
Mango
Guess
Jewelry shops
Clean public restrooms
It’s a nice first stop to grab coffee, use WiFi, or just get your bearings.
Stop 2: Rif Fort Village (7-minute walk)
📍 Rif Fort Village: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZqJtc8mDkJGbh5iK9
This area used to be an actual fort built in 1828 to protect Curaçao from invasions.
Today it’s beautifully restored with:
Restaurants
Bars
Shops
Ocean views
It still has the thick stone walls and historical feel, but now it’s full of life.
There’s also an ATM located here in the Rif Fort if you need cash.

Walk to Brionplein & The Swinging Old Lady (11-minute walk)
📍 Brionplein:https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cq1cqpLebd9r5km79
Walk through Rif Fort and you’ll arrive at Brionplein.
Right in front of you is the famous Queen Emma Bridge, also called the “Swinging Old Lady.”
It’s a floating pontoon bridge that connects Otrobanda to Punda.
Fun fact:When ships need to enter the harbor, the bridge swings open. If that happens while you’re crossing, don’t stress there’s a free ferry that takes pedestrians across.
Watching it move is part of the Curaçao experience.
Cross Into Punda (14-minute walk from ship)
Once you cross, you’ll see the iconic Handelskade waterfront.
📍 Handelskade: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Yw678gZezU1RYrcg8
Those bright pastel buildings? That’s the postcard view of Curaçao.
Why is Curaçao so colorful?
There’s a famous story that a governor once complained the white buildings gave him headaches and ordered them painted in color. Later, people discovered he owned shares in a paint company.
True or legend? Either way, Curaçao became one of the most colorful cities in the Caribbean.
Kura Hulanda Area (14-minute walk from ship)
📍 Kura Hulanda:https://maps.app.goo.gl/SQ9uwJCtsuPNBhPm6
About 8 minutes from the cruise terminal (Otrobanda side)
Before or after crossing into Punda, explore Kura Hulanda.
This area has deep historical significance and beautiful restored buildings.
While you’re there:
🍔 BrgrHaus If you want one of the most delicious burgers near the cruise port, this is it. Fresh, juicy, and seriously satisfying after walking around.
🍦 Then cool down with gelato from Il Gelato if you didn’t already.
Kura Hulanda is peaceful, charming, and very walkable.
On Your Way Back to the Ship
As you head back toward the cruise terminal, you’ll pass:
📍 5 O’Clock Somewhere: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zAzkfwCnzkAepaxXA
It’s a great final stop before boarding.
Grab a drink, sit by the water, and enjoy the ocean view with your ship right behind you.
It’s one of those “this is why I cruise” moments.
Payment Tips in Curaçao (Very Important for Cruise Visitors)
The official currency of Curaçao is the Caribbean Guilder (XCG / Cg).
Good news:
US dollars are widely accepted
Credit and debit cards are accepted in most places
Important to know:

Some small vendors prefer smaller bills

There are ATMs available, including one located at Rif Fort Village if you need to withdraw cash.
